Milky way At 16mm

Here is an image made form some data shot with the Canon 500D. Since I failed to get flats or even darks when I shot this, I had not tried doing anything with the data until now. But I finally decided to see just what I could get out of just aligning, stacking, and then post processing in PI and Lightroom to see what I could get out of it. While I would like to go back to this sort of shot in the future when I can gather a more complete data set, I am still pleasantly surprised by how this came out, and since it is definitely my best Milky Way image so far, I decided to post it here. The center of the image shows a very small North America Nebula, NGC7000, captured in much larger fashion with a true telescope also on this same trip. Aurora in Downtown Tromsø

Conditions had been looking favorable for some aurora, and a short but dramatic display happened right outside the hotel, which was naked eye visible. This streamer showed up over the bridge to the mainland for a minute or 2, then was gone. The red color was not quite visible by eye, but was captured by the camera.

Aurora in Kvaløya

After seeing such a nice display of aurora in Tromso, I decided to drive out to try to find a darker location without any city lights, so I headed over to the island of Kvaløya . I found a nice location with views to the north, but nothing much was happening. Right before packing up, I looked behind me and saw LOTS of activity directly overhead. This was my favorite capture, with lighting on the rocky ridge provided by an ~82% full moon.

I caught the waning moon crescent at sunrise, rising above the desert hills, after a full night of astroimaging under the pristine skies of the Arizona Sky Village, near Portal, AZ.
