Critique - Utah Gallery

Firstly, I continue to be amazed at the focusing performance and overall image quality that the R5 plus my suite of 3 lenses is able to produce. Really easy to produce images that are in crisp focus and well exposed for the conditions. All of the following are had held unless otherwise noted. I actually left camera at ISO 500 from a previous night and could not even tell. That would not have been the case with the 5DsR!

So here are some Images from Utah with preliminary processing on laptop. Colors do not agree between Lightroom and output jpeg displayed on laptop as background or via Irfanview. The colors when viewed outside of Lightroom appear to be over saturated, but then again inside of Smugmug site here they seem accurate to my Lightroom edits. Would love to hear how they look to you guys, especially regarding colors, plus any other preliminary feedback you might have. These are only posted here not to main site, and will likely get re-edited on my wide gamut monitor once I am home, but thought it might be fun to share some stuff in a preliminary way, as well as get some feedback...

  • Where We Are Staying - The View East

Where We Are Staying - The View East

Not a keeper, but included to show the wonderful home base location of our rented house. A zoomed in view of the view to the east from the property we are staying at. Really an amazing location and very private and peaceful. Not sure, but I think the monolith on the left here is featured in many shots from Kolob Canyon shown in this critique gallery...

Where We Are Staying - The View West

Not a keeper, but included to show the wonderful home base location of our rented house. Here is the matching view to the west, shown the next morning.

  • 100-500 Moon Shot

    100-500 Moon Shot

The RF 100-500 does the Moon handheld at 500mm, single image. This is of course a heavy crop.

  • Heading Towards Zion

    Heading Towards Zion

The landscape starts to present lots of photo opportunities well before entering the park. This is a heavy crop because I included a bunch of foreground that is not very interesting and distracts from the main scene, but the high MP of the R5 still makes this crop into a very reasonable image.

  • Zion - The Kolob Terrace Road

Zion - The Kolob Terrace Road

A random area along the Kolob Terrace Road, that enters the park farther south from the Kolob Canyon area. Perfect landscape photography conditions, with some cloud action. I really liked the red dirt matching the red rocks.

  • Along Kolob Terrace Road

    Along Kolob Terrace Road

Probably too far away - maybe needed to be shot as a multi-image panorama (although that would also display small at typical screen sizes I guess...) Liked the light and the contrast between the blue sky and orange rocks.

  • Kolob Terrace Road Return

    Kolob Terrace Road Return

Heading back after reaching a point that was closed due to snow, found this view down one of the many side roads/trails along the road. The tree on the left is a little distracting, could have spent more time framing this up, but had both a dog and a wife waiting in the car so perhaps I rushed the composition a bit.

  • Zion - Kolob Canyon #1

    Zion - Kolob Canyon #1

Heading up the canyon, it was jaw dropping views from the start. This was hard to see completely from the road. Imaged through trees to frame it, from the pullout parking lot. Tree on left is OOF - maybe not a big deal? What do you think?

  • Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive #2

Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive #2

It became obvious it would be hard to get to the end overlook as it was almost impossible not to keep stopping to take more images. This shot had a bit too much clutter in the foreground, but a 16 x 9 crop seems to have removed the worst of that. This is a 3 shot bracket HDR to try to cover the wide dynamic range between the foreground and the lighted rock faces. Hopefully it still looks natural. It approximates what the eye was taking in when viewing the scene.

  • Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive #3

Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive #3

A shot of the same scene, a few seconds later at a slightly longer focal length. I will have to decide between these 2 views, or maybe I should post them both?

  • Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive #4

Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive #4

The 14-35 zoom really accentuated the sky in this one. I like that effect. Not sure if there is too much foreground, I have already cropped this to a 16x9 format to try to manage that somewhat. And yes, the sky was crazy blue for many of these shots with no polarizer (which doesn't play well at 14mm anyway as we all know...)

  • Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive Overlook

Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive Overlook

From the overlook there were lots of great images, although the sun was directly behind us and very lowmaking it hard on any wide angle shots to keep one's shadow out of the frame and almost impossible to keep the overlook railing out of the shot. This was images off to the side and at a longer focal length to avoid those issues.

  • Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive , Right after the Overlook

Zion - Kolob Canyon Scenic Drive , Right after the Overlook

Back in the car to head down at right at the first curve heading down saw this. Jumped out of the car for a quick capture. One of my favorites so far I think, as I am a sucker for the grand vista shot as you both know...

  • Snow Canyon Colors

    Snow Canyon Colors

The rock colors right after entering Snow Canyon State Park are amazing. I also liked the contrast with the black volcanic rocks in the foreground.

  • Last Light At Kodachrome Basin

    Last Light At Kodachrome Basin

Captured along the Angel's Palace Trail in Kodachrome Basin State Park right before the sun went down.

  • Firewave Foreground

    Firewave Foreground

The Firewave rock formation in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada was mobbed with people,. This is one of the few views I could get without anyone in the frame.

  • White Dome Trail #1

    White Dome Trail #1

On the second hike of the day I was on my own. I took the White Dome Trail and went through a small slot canyon. That late in the day the small canyon did not get any sunlight and was unremarkable. The wind was very strong all day blowing constantly and gusting upwards of 50 mph at times. By the time of this hike it has filled the air with dust, giving a look of impending rain that is actually just dust in the air.

  • White Dome Trail #2

    White Dome Trail #2

Another shot showing the eerie lighting caused by the sun filtering through the large clouds of dust blown up by the wind.

  • Valley of Fire Pullout

    Valley of Fire Pullout

Another trail snakes off into the wilds of Valley of Fire State Park.

  • Capitol Reef Scenic Drive

    Capitol Reef Scenic Drive

Late day light on the amazing rock formations along the Scenic Drive in Capitol Reef National Park.
