Rocky View - Headland Cove
One of the first impressive views I came to along the trail in Point Lobos Reserve
Single Cypress
I liked the hardy looking single cypress perched on this large rock.
Point Lobos Morning 'Blues'
I hit Point Lobos in late morning light, and after a short hike down the Cypress Grove Trail saw some spectacular colors in the water.
Long Exposure Beach
I played with a 10 stop ND filter on a beach near the elusive Garrapata State Park that I was never able to be sure I found. The waves were coming in pretty good, but the longer exposure changes the mood of the scene.
Fleeting Sunset
I went back to Point Lobos at the end of the day to try to capture the sunset. There was only a short moment of color before the sun went behind a band of clouds on the horizon.
Light and Shadow
Afternoon light accentuates the undulating contours of one of the many gullies at Zabriskie Point.
Dante's At End Of Day
We got up to Dante's View a little later than we planned, but there was still some gorgeous light along the horizon. The bright sky served to underscore how desolate the landscape looked.
Zabriskie Morning
ot to Zabriskie Point before sunrise, and then watched the place fill up with photographers! Not any good clouds and a difficult dynamic range made this a tough subject. I took lots of shots but this one right before the sun hits Manly Beacon is my favorite.
Mesquite Dunes Close-Up
After an exhausting walk out to the dunes to catch sunrise, the clouds blocked the direct sun. There was still some very subtle coloring coming form the sky that reflected on the dunes as the sun struggled to break through.
Father Crowley Point
We reached the Father Crowley Point Overlook coming back into the park form the Alabama Hills just as the sun was setting. I took a series of bracketed shots to produce this HDR panorama of the view. The wind was very strong and shooting handheld it was hard to hold still while clicking the shutter!
Storm Clouds Over the Mojave
Threatening clouds gather over the northern reaches of the huge Mojave National Preserve in California.
Yikes!
Do you think there are enough spines on these plants?!!?!
Shifting Vista
The seemingly inexhaustible amount of sand presses up against the base of a range of mountains along California Highway 62, heading towards Joshua Tree National Park.
Sea of Sand
The desert sand appears to be washing up to the base of the mountains, along California Highway 62.
Late Sun
The late day sun makes one of the huge rock formations in the northern side of Joshua Tree National park glow orange.
Joshua Tree Nightfall
The bizarre shapes of Joshua trees are silhouetted against the sunset in Joshua Tree National Park.
Clouds Versus Sun
Clouds and sun fight for supremacy as the road heads out of the desert and into the mountains, along California Highway 78, approaching Julian.
Pacific Beach Sunset
Sunset off of Pacific Beach, in San Diego, CA.
Microcosm
If you stop and look closely, the level of detail and variety underfoot is breathtaking, as shown by this closeup of colored stones that make up a large portion of the shore areas around the many tidal pools near San Diego.
Ancient Abstract
I have to remind myself that Nature's canvas is everywhere, even in the rocks right above the Cabrillo National Monument tidal pools in San Diego.
Coastal Trees In Fog
The marine layer covers the upper grounds of the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, giving these trees a distinctive look.
Joshua Tree Shapes
The trees take on many intriguing shapes through Joshua Tree National Park.
Late Day Light At Barker Dam
The late day sun lights up the surrounding rocks at Barker Dam in Joshua Tree National Park.
